Blackjack, also called 21, is one of the most popular card games in casinos, and sometimes in other settings. The rules are fairly simple, but playing strategies can become very complex. Let’s take a look at how player may win money playing blackjack.
In most forms of blackjack, one or more players are playing against the dealer. Each of the players will have at least two cards, and may choose to get more. The dealer starts with two cards, one of which is visible. A player’s score is the sum of the values of their cards. The number cards have the value of their number, face cards are worth 10, and aces can be either 1 or 11, whichever is advantageous to the player.
Players win if they either beat the dealers score or achieve a score of 21, but they lose if they go over 21, which is called busting. Players can hit, that is ask for another card as many times as they want until they stand or bust. Standing means no additional cards are wanted for this hand. The dealer is required to hit until they bust or they achieve a score of at least 17.
In this simplified version of play, the players either double their money, more for exactly 21 which is called a blackjack, or lose it during each round of play. This can be a very exciting game, and can also lead to winning or losing money very rapidly. The challenge is to find a way to consistently win, even if the amount is small.
There is a fairly simple basic strategy for blackjack that if played correctly leads to either slightly favorable or slightly unfavorable odds for players, depending on the rules being used. Based on the dealer’s face up card (the dealer’s other card is face down) and the player’s current hand, it tells players whether to hit or stand. This approach is fairly easy to learn, but unfortunately in many cases it only minimizes losses rather than maximizes gains.
Counting cards refers to a number of complex approaches. The theory is that by analyzing the cards that have already been played from the current deck, one can estimate the chances of players winning during the remainder of the deck. If the deck seems favorable, higher bets should be made, otherwise lower ones are recommended. The team versions have one person count at a table while making small bets. If they detect a favorable deck, they send a secret signal to a confederate who will sit down at the table and make larger bets.
Since counting can give players an edge, casinos don’t like it. Nevada casinos must accept individual counters. Teams and other forms of collusion are always banned. Some casinos have rather harsh sanctions for team play, assuming of course that they catch the team. To sum up, blackjack can be a winnable game, but it takes significant effort to win consistently.
